TCI Digital Cable Q&A

Q1. What is TCI Digital Cable?

TCI Digital Cable is a new technological evolution in TV entertainment that offers viewers advanced options and value for their TV dollar, including more choice, more convenience and more control. Delivering additional channels through the cable already in the home, TCI Digital Cable offers viewers more of the TV they want to watch.

Q2. How is TCI Digital Cable different from TCI analog cable service?

TCI Digital Cable is an enhanced product that uses advanced compression technology to deliver more TV entertainment channels and complements TCI's Existing analog service. Key new benefits with TCI Digital Cable include:

  • Movie Variety: more movie channels, more choices, 24 hours a day
  • Special-Interest Channels: a range of sports, kids, lifestyle and educational channels
  • Pay-Per-View: convenient on-screen ordering at a lower cost than video rentals
  • Digital Music Express: 10 CD quality music channels
  • On-Screen Guide: customized programming menu that puts viewers in control
  • Parental Control: an effective way to manage discretionary viewing

Q3. What is compression technology?

Compression technology allows TCI to offer more programming to customers by digitally "squeezing" additional channels in the space normally occupied by one or more analog channels. The current compression ratio for TCI Digital Cable is 12 digital channels made available in the space used by one analog channel.

Q4. How can a customer sign up for TCI Digital Cable?

New and existing customers can have TCI Digital Cable installed by calling their local TCI customer service center or toll-free number to set up an installation time.

Q5. How many additional channels will customers receive?

TCI Digital Cable will deliver up to 36 additional video and 10 audio channels of entertainment programming.

Q6. What programming is available with TCI Digital Cable?

While programming prices and content may vary, customers can receive multiple channels of premium movie services such as HBO 2 and 3, Showtime 2 Starz!2 and three Encore services; special interest networks including Independent Film Channel, History Channel, SciFi Channel, Home & Garden TV, Discovery Science, Discovery Kids and ESPNews; up to nine pay-per-view channels (including one adult channel); one pay-per-view preview channel; 10 Digital Music Express (DMX) channels; and all local networks.

Q7. How much does TCI DIgital Cable cost?

Existing TCI customers can receive up to 36 additional video and 10 audio channels of entertainment programming for only $10 more per month. New customers who subscribe to any TCI analog cable package can also receive TCI Digital Cable for only $10 more per month. Additional installation fees and a $3.30 monthly equipment rental fee for the set-top Digital Compression Terminal (DCT) and universal remote apply. (Customers will exchange their current analog set-top box for the new DCT and remote at the time of installation and will pay a revised rental fee). Additional digital programming access fees for multi-set viewing, taxes and franchise fees may also apply.

Q8. Is TCI analog cable service required to receive TCI Digital Cable?

Yes. Customers must subscribe to one of TCI's analog cable packages to receive TCI Digital Cable.

Q9. If someone is not a customer, can he/she receive TCI Digital Cable?

New customers who call to subscribe to one of TCI's analog cable packages can add TCI Digital Cable for an additional $10 per month. TCI will install the set-top Digital Compression Terminal (DCT) for new customers who want the expanded channel offerings of TCI Digital Cable. Additional installation and equipment rental fees apply.

Q10. What additional equipment and connections are required, if any?

The only equipment required for TCI Digital Cable is the new, set-top Digital Compression Terminal (DCT) and a universal remote. Additional set-top DCT's and remotes are available for multiple TV households. Each set-top DCT requires an extension of the customer's existing phone service to enable the interactive function of the box, including push-button pay-per-view ordering. This will not affect regular phone service and additional phone charges will not be incurred by the customer.

Q11. Do all customers receive the premium movie channels (HBO 2 and 3, Showtime 2, Starz! 2 and Encore plexes) available with TCI Digital Cable as part of the $10 digital programming?

Not necessarily. Customers must first subscribe to the primary premium movie channel(s) on TCI's analog cable service. Customers will then receive the multiplex(es) of those premium movie channel(s) as part of their subscription to TCI Digital Cable.

Q12. How does TCI Digital Cable work?

TCI Digital Cable programming originates at TCI's National Digital Television Center in Colorado where programming is digitally compressed and uplinked to a TCI satellite. From the satellite, the programming is then downlinked by local TCI systems and transmitted along existing cable lines directly into customers' homes, where the digital signal is converted by the set-top Digital Compression Terminal (DCT) installed in the household. To receive and use TCI Digital Cable, the customer needs this new set-top DCT, a universal remote and a phone line extension provided with installation.

Q13. Why should a customer choose TCI Digital Cable over a satellite (DBS) product and what are its key benefits?

TCI Digital Cable is a more convenient and cost-effective alternative to the dish systems offered by many satellite providers. With TCI Digital Cable, customers receive all local channels in addition to expanded channels of entertainment. Customers do not have to buy a separate satellite dish or other necessary hardware or pay expensive installation costs. Key benefits of TCI Digital Cable include:

  • All local broadcast stations included without a separate antenna
  • No expensive satellite dish equipment to purchase
  • Low installation cost
  • Multi-set viewing for less than $10/month per set
  • Local service and repair
  • No up-front programming fees or service contracts
Q14. Is it possible to have TCI Digital Cable installed on more than one TV?

Yes, however a separate set-top DCT and an extension of the customer's phone line is required for each TV. A monthly equipment rental fee of $3.30 is required for each additional set-top DCT and universal remote, plus a $4.99 digital programming access fee per additional TV set.

Q15. Does a customer need a digital TV set for TCI Digital Cable?

No. With the set-top DCT, subscribers can immediately enjoy digital programming entertainment on their current TV sets.
